I apologise for not posting for so long – but we’ve had limited internet access camping in Italy!  We’ve been amazed at the seemingly low (internet) price of land in central Italy for some years now, so decided to visit before our fantasy of owning a couple of hectares and making our own olive oil, wine and goats cheese spiralled out of control. Was it possible?  After a couple of years of strict saving I’d say YES!  And so we have initiated the first steps of Progetto Vigneto.

Step 1. Visit the area to see if we like it

Mountains with fields of poppies and fresh seafood – yes indeed

Step 2. Look at some properties to get an idea of realistic prices and narrow down the search area

‘Restructuring’ means the 120mq ‘casale’ is a pile of rubble, but the view of Gran Sasso is nice…

One day this could be ours...

Step 3. Learn to speak Italian fluently

Step 4. Subsist on a meagre diet and save every penny

A ripe tomato, a couple of basil leaves, a glug of extra virgin olive oil, and bread is a feast fit for a King…

Step 5. Move to Italy (to aid steps 2 and 3)

We’re working on this…

Step 6. Purchase our dream plot of land

And construct an outdoor pizza oven and grill from the pile of rubble before worrying about building a house we can actually live in…

Yes, that’s the mountain shrouded in cloud. It’s not a bad view from our ‘potential’ garden…

Best not to get any further ahead, as they say one step at a time…

Due to Step 4 and a love of the tomatoes here, we uncomplainingly subsisted on a diet of said tomatoes, bread and olive oil though treated ourselves to antipasti at an Agriturismo (to check out our future competition) near L’Aquila.

So here’s to an Italian Summer…
